Whispers, Lies and Reward

The demon assigned
to whisper
'No, you can't'
was
overruled
by the Word
of the Lord
"I can
do
all things
through Christ
Who
strengthens me."
And then
the demon
took the voice
of another
and said
'You can't.'
The piercing
went deeper
but
the Word
pierced more
dividing
soul and spirit
--asking--
"What
can man
do
to me?"
--and telling--
"I will
never
leave you
nor forsake
you."
In a rage
the demon
began
to lie
more aggressively
in
the native tongue
of its father
but
the Word
more boldly
decreed
"A curse
without a cause
shall not
alight."
In a fury
the demon
began to dig
frantically
a deep
pit
unaware
it had dug
its own grave
falling
headlong
fulfilling
God's promise
to His
beloved child:
"With
your eyes
alone,
you
shall see
the reward
of
the wicked."

The Battle

The battle waged on
my spirit, my flesh
the minions were sent
to tempt, to assassinate
The Lord
to try, to purify
the choice was mine
all along--a lie!
Until I leaned on
rested in
and abode with
Him
I was defeated

(written prior to first Christmas spent without my grown children)

I told him
I didn't
want
him to think
he wasn't
enough,

wanted
them, too.
People
who
didn't
exist
when we
fell in love
now
pieces of our heart
walking about
outside of us.
My friends hurt,
too
Husbands, gone.
Children, gone,
and not
just
across
the country
Siblings, gone.
People
left out,
excluded,
no money
for
presents
Unbelievers
taunted,
accused
of trying
to take
Christmas
from us
in places
where
excess
which has
nothing
to do
with You
takes place.
I've
been given
so much
and
my shame
humanity's shame
is
we want
that
which
we cannot
have.
I pray
for courage
to make this
the best
holiday
I can
for
the best friend
I've ever had
in this life.
I look
out my
bedroom window
and see
the tea olives
blooming
Shrubbery
my mother
told me
to plant
by the window,
by the door,
for the
sweet scent
and of course
we do
what
our mothers
tell us.
I am
reminded
of her
strength
her losses
widowed young
carrying on
still blooming
and
telling me
to do
the same
with the
sweet scent
of hope.
I hope
for the
revelation
of
the time
when time
no longer
is counted
and
goodbyes
and
I miss yous
are
no longer.

Another Front Porch Meditation

Sufficiency
in the Lord
alone
Others, things
we hold
with open hands
That which
we grasp
we lose
What truly
sustains us?
Or who?
People
relationships
things
give temporary
joy and energy
soon enough
all
go away
What and
Who
are we left with?
How sad
we regard
Him
as the last
resort
The Source
of our breath
and each heartbeat
oxygen and life
to every cell
sight to awe
at His creation
We are made
to rejoice
and be happy
fully satisfied
in Him
but we long
first
for what
goes away
God in heaven
help us

Matthew 6:33New International Version (NIV)

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Unencumbered

Flocklets
rise
from their
wing-covered
slumber
flying sonnets
across
cotton dotted
pale blue
erasing clouds
on their way
to the destined
day
given
ordained
orchestrated
by the Lord.
What will they do?--
unencumbered
by distractions
false weights
burdens, worries
they were never
meant to carry?
They'll eat of
the smorgasbord
already laid out,
confidently peck
a warning
to any
who dare
intrude
on The Plan,
then soar!
hailing drafts
resting
in full flight
and not worry
who will lead
the way
to tonight's
dreams.
Turns
will be taken
according to strength
there is no shame
to be the ones
who must be
carried
at the ends
of the vee
Vita!
for when
they are
refreshed
they will lead
again
or
simply
be content
as
the strong link
between
one
and all
working
for the good
of the whole
never comprehending
humility
or arrogance
in rank
concerned only
instinctively
with doing
the will
of God.

Hardened Hearts

What did
my generation
want
for their children?
All
the best schools
the right clothing
the new truck
the latest iPhone
the popular activities
the best
of everything
two incomes
could buy
and what
do
parents
in Third World
countries
want
for their children?
Enough food to live
a few garments
to cover
their nakedness
the opportunity
for an education
and should
that opportunity
present itself
the girls
might be
kidnapped
for the pleasure
of sick bastards
the boys
might forego
in order
to go to war
or
to work
for
a bite
of food
while people
fat
and satisfied
resent
their desires
question
their motives
afraid
they may
have to share
from the hoard
of junk
which crowds out
their family members
in homes
lovely
on the exterior
only
the rich
resent
the poor
for intruding
then go
to church
to worship
Jesus--
turned away
from lodging
born
in a barn
soon
to flee
His country
His earthly father
warned
in a dream
of murderous
intentions
for His life
Was
this little family
well received
in Egypt
or spurned
did they,
refugees,
hide
and come out
only
to work
on the fringe
doing jobs
the Egyptians
despised
a skilled carpenter
harvesting
olives
pomegranates
ever fearful
they'd be sent
back
to the place
where murder
was their destiny?
People crave
a taste
of what
we gorge upon
and we
hate them
for their hope
and
callously
wish them back
to their
waking nightmare
so as not
to disturb
the American
dream
they'll die
of lack
while
we die
of excess
these beggars
named Lazarus
will be comforted
and the rich
who would not
share
will discover
they'd grown
too fat
to fit
through
the eye
of the needle.

New Morning

Back lit Spanish moss
reverences from
the crepe myrtle
dew diamonds
in the grass
illuminated
by the morning sun
shy magnolia bloom
three petals
cover the stamen
Father, Son, Holy Spirit
birds waking
calling the earth
to worship
bullfrogs croak bass
tree frogs peep tenor
The sycamore
lifts its limbs
in praise
kitty regally
salutes the sun
with starburst eyes
while doggie
lies loyally by
me
as I marvel
at this blessing
given
another day
fresh
new
virgin page
on which to write
the story
of my life
Holy Spirit Maestro
then lifts
His baton
toward me,
Compose!

Monday Morning Musing

Morning light
peeking around perimeter
of bedroom blinds
wakes me
Another night
swiftly gone
and again
I marvel
I am rested
Birds to feed
dog and cat
too
roses to visit
geraniums to prune
porch to sweep
dewy, dirty paws
to brush
before
going inside
to raise dining room blind
Husband's
soft snore
I go back
to the front porch
to look in
I praise
the Lord
for a sunny day
and
a few
tears
slip
down my cheeks
for a son
moving away
I wipe them
on the sleeve
of an inside-out
night shirt
and smile
inwardly
that woods
surround
unseemly dressing
and
selfish tears
I wait
for bedroom blinds
to raise
A bed-headed boy
inside
a man
of six decades
smiles
and signs
I love you
He'll join me
slowly
silently
on the rocker
while I
sway gently
on the swing
my mind
full throttle
his
floating peacefully
along
a river
He's always thankful
for the good
the bad
while I
petulantly
demand
the good
and
explosively
fight
the bad
Will he
ever
rise up
with fists
and
will I
ever
glide peacefully
along
with what
each day
presents?
Alone,
no,
but together
yes
We are one.

An in Your Face Mother's Day

A godly grandmother
a strong mother
and me
I am a good mother
because
my grandmother
taught me
I could be
and my mother
said
I was
If the boldness
of this
strikes you wrong
I don't care
because
my mothers
would tell me
not to

A Perfect Day

camera in hand
flowers, birds
sun reddened
faces and arms
walk in woods
hands in earth
volunteer magnolias
replanted intentionally
two stewards
resting on
still cool ground
a bit of land
temporarily
called home
looking up
dazzling sun lit filaments
golden glow
pine pollen
renewal, rebirth
windmill squeals
change
gentle breezes
love does not mind
dirt and sweat
head on chest
arm encircling
shoulder
and reflects
children
parents
simplicity
in purpose
now cherishing
a moment
no one
needs them
freedom earned
after
beginning
long ago
and tries
in vain
not to think
how quickly
this life
passes

...Today You Will Be With Me in Paradise

RIP Robert 09/26/52 - 02/11/09

The Crucifixion

26 And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. 27 And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who weremourning and lamenting for him. 28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

32 Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. 35 And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine 37 and saying,“If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”

39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
----------------------------
I'm not sure
the broken places
were ever mended
but your travails
did not go
unnoticed
by your Jesus
You acknowledged Him
unashamedly
at the end
You knew Him
all along
during the decades
you dowsed
your heartaches
They would not
go away
as certain tormentors
though you tried
to wash them
into oblivion
You knelt
and asked Him
into your heart
and war waged
for decades
No demon from hell
or satan's emissaries
on Earth
can taunt you
now
where there are
no
tears, death, mourning,
crying or pain
All those things
are gone forever
and though
it feels
you are, too
I know
that I know
that I know
I will see you again
as I did
in my dream--
young, strong,
unblemished
wearing garments
of red--the blood
and white--the righteousness,
an undeserved gift
mercy granted!
I was looking
at your likeness
in a photograph
on the mantel
which captured
the culmination
of your life's hardships
and in you walked
glorified
old things
had indeed
passed away
Thank you
for the hug
I needed
the reassurance
I love you, Bubba
Some judged you harshly
and serrated tongues
cut jagged wounds
on your already
torn heart
But you have risen
above all that
and those who continue
to recount the bad
have the stench
of death
on them
instead of the
Good News
which Jesus proclaimed
with every ounce of His being
the crescendo
on the cross
where He gladly
welcomed
latecomers
"Truly" our Lord said
on February 11, 2009
"today you will be
with me
in Paradise"
